Aikido is a martial art of overcoming strength with weakness and hardness with softness — a highly practical self-defense skill. A child's sense of movement begins to develop around ages 4–5, making it ideal to start from a young age.
Girls, who may be at a disadvantage in raw strength and aggression, can especially gain self-defense skills through Aikido. Aikido practice includes many protective movements (ukemi), helping children learn how to protect themselves in dangerous situations such as accidental falls.
Aikido emphasizes joint locks and throwing techniques, with endless variations that require adapting to the opponent's different attacks — a martial art well suited to children who like to think. Every child who comes to practice not only builds a strong body, but also gains rewards in mind and spirit from Aikido's principles.
5 KEY TRAINING AREAS
Etiquette & Shape
From the very start of practice, Aikido requires etiquette and proper footwork, with a complete set of ceremonial rules. One must bow upon entering the dojo, sit formally (seiza) and listen attentively during instruction, thank one's partner after practice, and bow to the teacher and the Founder. Aikido also demands an upright posture and steady steps, placing great emphasis on good form.
Private Defence
Do not forget that Aikido is a martial art of overcoming strength with weakness and hardness with softness — a highly practical self-defense skill. Girls, who may be at a disadvantage in raw strength, can especially gain self-defense abilities through Aikido.
Emergency Protection
Aikido practice includes many protective movements, known in technical terms as 'ukemi.' Mastering these helps children learn how to protect themselves in dangerous situations such as accidental falls, minimizing the harm caused by unexpected tumbles.
Think Deeply
Unlike other striking-based martial arts, Aikido emphasizes joint locks and throws, with endless variations requiring adaptation to the opponent's different attacks — a martial art well suited to children who enjoy thinking. Every child who practices not only builds a strong body, but also gains rewards in mind and spirit from Aikido's principles.
Backbone
Every martial art involves grueling physical training and constant repetition. As children gain a sense of achievement in the art, they also build patience and willpower — qualities that are most indispensable in the 21st century.
